10 Tips for Staying Healthy While Travelling

Travelling solo can be a thrilling and rewarding experience. You have the freedom to explore new places and cultures at your own pace, without the constraints of a travel partner or group. However, travelling solo can also present unique challenges when it comes to staying healthy and happy on the road. In this article, we will explore 10 tips for staying healthy and happy while travelling solo.

1. Plan Ahead for Your Health Needs

Before embarking on your solo journey, it is important to plan ahead for your health needs. This may include getting any necessary vaccinations, packing any prescription medications, and researching local healthcare options in the areas you will be visiting. It may also be helpful to pack a small first aid kit with items such as band-aids, pain relievers and anti-diarrheal medication. I travel only with carry on luggage no matter how long I’m travelling for.  I simply cannot stand the thought of hauling full size luggage and a carry on piece so it’s pretty important to have the smallest aid kit I can find.

2. Stay Active

Travelling solo can often involve long days of exploring new cities and walking long distances. However, it can also be tempting to spend your downtime lounging in your hotel room. To stay healthy and energized, it is important to make an effort to stay active. This could involve going for a morning run, taking a yoga class, or even just going for a walk around the city.

3. Eat Well

Travelling solo can also present unique challenges when it comes to eating well. It can be tempting to indulge in local delicacies and street food, but it is important to maintain a balanced diet to keep your energy levels up. Seek out healthy options such as fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. It may also be helpful to pack healthy snacks such as nuts, seeds, and granola bars for when you are on-the-go.

4. Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated is key to staying healthy and happy while travelling solo. It can be easy to forget to drink enough water when you are busy exploring new places, so make an effort to carry a water bottle with you at all times. If you are travelling in a place where the tap water is not safe to drink, be sure to stock up on bottled water or invest in a portable water filter.

5. Get Enough Sleep

Travelling solo can often involve early mornings and late nights, but it is important to prioritize getting enough sleep. Lack of sleep can lead to decreased energy levels, mood swings, and a weakened immune system. Make an effort to establish a bedtime routine, such as reading or listening to calming music before bed, to help you wind down after a long day of exploring.

6. Take Breaks

Travelling solo can be exhilarating, but it can also be overwhelming at times. It is important to take breaks when you need them, whether that means spending an afternoon lounging in a park or taking a day off from sightseeing altogether. Taking breaks can help prevent burnout and allow you to fully enjoy your travels.

7. Practice Self-Care

Travelling solo can also be a great opportunity to practice self-care. This could involve taking a long bath, treating yourself to a massage, or even just spending some time alone to reflect on your experiences. Prioritizing self-care can help you stay centered and grounded while travelling solo.

8. Stay Connected

Travelling solo can also be isolating at times, so it is important to make an effort to stay connected with loved ones back home. This could involve scheduling regular check-ins with friends and family, or even just sending a quick text message to let someone know you are thinking of them. Staying connected can help you feel supported and grounded while exploring new places.

9. Embrace New Experiences

Travelling solo is a great opportunity to try new things and step out of your comfort zone. Embrace new experiences, whether that means trying a new type of cuisine, going on a thrilling adventure, or learning a new skill. Pushing yourself out of your comfort zone can lead to personal growth and a deeper appreciation for the world around you.

10. Trust Your Instincts

Travelling solo can be empowering, but it is important to trust your instincts and stay safe while on the road. Listen to your intuition and avoid situations that feel uncomfortable or unsafe. Make an effort to be aware of your surroundings and keep your belongings close at hand. It may also be helpful to research local customs and cultural norms to avoid inadvertently offending anyone.

Some great tips for staying healthy while traveling. Becoming ill on a trip can be so disappointing especially if one is traveling solo!

Absolutely! I have had my fair share of illnesses while travelling and I would prefer not to go there again. 🙂

These are wonderful tips for solo travelers. Eating well and having enough sleep are the ones resonated with me. Traveling solo definitely reduces stress. I say this from my own experience.

I got a bit sick on a cruise one time. Hand, foot and mouth disease. I’m pretty sure I got it in the airport on the way there.

Definitely going to be more adamant about masking in the airport, washing hands obsessively and having a travel partner hold my baggage while I use the restroom to avoid any cross contamination.

Such an important post! I can speak for myself when I say that many times when I travel I don’t eat as well or stay as hydrated when traveling because I am always on the move, am trying new cuisine, may not have the option for as healthy options. This post definitely proves you can have new experience and stay healthy.

Your tips for staying healthy while traveling are so helpful. Staying hydrated is the number one thing that made a huge difference for me while traveling. It’s easy to forget to drink water regularly while traveling and that always gave me headaches and just feeling tired.

I used to travel solo (mostly solo!) for work almost weekly. I think the toughest thing was eating healthy – I’m so glad you added it to this list! It really isn’t as much of a challenge as we make it out to be and so important to keep in mind, as are all of your tips!
