Roma, located in the heart of the Queensland outback, is a charming town rich in history and natural beauty. I visited Roma for a day and a half, and it was a memorable experience. The town’s warm hospitality and unique attractions left a lasting impression on me.
Roma is known for its impressive cattle industry and historical sites. Despite my short stay, I was able to explore several key attractions. The blend of country charm and community spirit made my visit truly special.
During my visit, I enjoyed learning about the town’s history and culture. Roma’s relaxed pace and friendly locals made it easy to feel at home. I highly recommend Roma as a travel destination for anyone exploring Queensland.
The Queensland outback offers stunning landscapes, and Roma is no exception. The town’s beautiful parks and gardens are perfect for a leisurely stroll. Overall, my time in Roma was both relaxing and enlightening.
Getting to Roma
I traveled to Roma by car from Brisbane, sharing the ride with friends. The drive took us about six hours, including a few stops. The scenic route offered beautiful views of the Queensland countryside.
For those who prefer flying, there are convenient options available. Some friends flew Jetstar to Brisbane and then took Rex Airlines to Roma. The flight is quick and hassle-free, making it a great alternative to driving.
If you’re planning to drive, make sure your car is in good condition. The roads are well-maintained, but it’s important to be prepared for long distances. Bring plenty of water and snacks for the journey.
Driving from Brisbane to Roma is straightforward, following the Warrego Highway most of the way. There are several small towns to explore along the route. Consider stopping at Toowoomba or Dalby for a break and a bite to eat. We stopped at Dalby briefly for a bite to eat.
For those flying, check flight schedules in advance to coordinate your connections. Roma Airport is small but efficient, with friendly staff. Booking your flights early can help secure the best fares.
There is a third option for getting to Roma. There is a train that takes about 11 hours. I was about to take the overnight train but realised there are no sleepers and I’d be sitting up all night. The train is called The Westlander and is operated by Queensland Rail. Find information here.
Whether you choose to drive or fly, Roma is easily accessible from Brisbane. Both options offer their own unique experiences. Decide based on your preference for travel time and comfort.
For road travelers, plan your trip during daylight hours for the best experience. The countryside is lovely, with plenty of photo opportunities. Also, keep an eye out for wildlife near the road.
If flying, pack light and be mindful of airline baggage restrictions. The flights are short, so you won’t need much on board. Enjoy the aerial view of the outback as you approach Roma.
First Impressions
I was very impressed with Roma from the moment I arrived. The town has a welcoming and friendly atmosphere that immediately stood out. The people were incredibly polite, especially the drivers.
One thing that caught my attention was how drivers stopped for pedestrians well before the crossings. In Melbourne, you often have to step onto the crossing to get cars to stop. Roma’s drivers were respectful and cautious, making walking around the town easy and safe.
The town is well organised, with supermarkets and other shops easy to find. I noticed that there seemed to be a pub on every corner, which added to the lively atmosphere. The abundance of pubs gave the town a social and vibrant feel.
Roma is also a very clean town. The streets, parks, and public spaces were all well-maintained. It was refreshing to see such a high standard of cleanliness.
I found Roma to be a charming place with a lot of character. The mix of historic buildings and modern amenities was appealing. It felt like a perfect blend of past and present.
The layout of the town made it easy to navigate. Whether I was looking for a place to eat or a local attraction, everything was conveniently located. This made my short stay very enjoyable.
I could see myself spending a couple of months in Roma if I were traveling around Australia. The town has everything you need for a comfortable stay. It offers both relaxation and plenty of activities to keep you entertained.
Must-Visit Attractions
The Big Rig
The Big Rig is a major tourist attraction that tells the story of Australia’s oil and gas industry. The interactive displays and historical artifacts are fascinating and educational.
We had other activities to do (socialising and drinking in the pub) but one of the most interesting parts of The Big Rig would be the Night Show. The show uses lights, sound, and video to bring Roma’s history to life. It is a unique and entertaining way to learn about the town’s heritage.
The Big Rig also offers a guided tour, which is very informative. The guideds share many interesting facts and stories about Roma’s past. The tour givesu a deeper appreciation for the town’s significant role in the oil and gas industry.
Roma’s Historic Walk
Roma’s Historic Walk is a delightful way to explore the town’s rich history. The walk features several key landmarks, each with its own story. You can enjoy seeing the old buildings and learning about their historical importance.
One of the standout landmarks is the Roma Courthouse. Built in 1901, it is an impressive example of Federation architecture. The courthouse is still in use today and remains a key part of Roma’s community.
Another notable stop on the Historic Walk is the Heritage-listed School of Arts building. This building has been a cultural hub since 1912. It now houses a library and serves as a community meeting place. There is a gallery there too but it was not open when I visited so make sure you check opening hours here before you visit.
Roma Saleyards
My visit to the Roma Saleyards was a fun experience. The saleyards is the largest cattle-selling centre in the Southern Hemisphere. Watching a live cattle auction is both exciting and educational. On the day we visited the auctions were not in operation so check what days these happen on if you would like to witness the spectacle.
The scale of the operation at the Roma Saleyards is truly impressive. Thousands of cattle are sold here every week. The atmosphere is lively, with buyers and sellers actively engaging in the auction process.
There is a visitors centre and guided tours provid insights into how the auctions work. For information on when these happen call the Roma Visitor Information Centre on (07) 4624 0204.
The Big Bottle Tree
The Big Bottle Tree is another must-see attraction in Roma. This iconic tree is over 100 years old and stands 6 meters tall. It is a great example of the unique flora found in the Queensland outback.
The tree’s distinctive shape makes it a popular spot for photos. It is located near the town center, making it easy to visit. The Big Bottle Tree is a symbol of Roma’s natural beauty and resilience.
Although the tree looks a little like a Boab tree, it is not one and there is a sign next to it saying so.
Local Cuisine and Dining
We had dinner at the Royal on Ninety-Nine, one of Roma’s more modern pubs. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, perfect for a group meal. The menu offered a variety of options, from pub classics to more unique dishes.
I ordered the nachos, which were decent but not the highlight of the evening. Others in our group had different meals and were very satisfied. The feedback on their dishes was positive, with comments about the quality and taste.
Another popular dining spot in Roma is the Roma Explorers Inn. Known for its hearty meals and friendly service, it’s a great place to try local cuisine. The steaks here are particularly recommended.
For a more casual dining experience, Bakearoma offers delicious pastries and light meals. Their coffee is also excellent, making it a perfect spot for breakfast or a midday snack. The bakery’s warm, cozy vibe adds to the overall charm.
Roma has a range of dining options to suit different tastes and budgets. From modern pubs to cozy cafes, there’s something for everyone. Enjoying local food is a delightful part of the Roma experience.
Outdoor Activities and Natural Beauty
Carnarvon National Park
Carnarvon National Park is located near Roma and is known for its stunning landscapes. Although I was under the weather and couldn’t explore, my friends visited and were very impressed. The park’s beauty and abundant wildlife left a lasting impression on them.
Some of my friends hiked the Main Gorge Walking Track, which took most of the day. They are experienced hikers and found the trail to be very good. The scenic views and diverse flora and fauna made it worth the effort.
Others opted for the Nature Trail, a shorter one-hour walk. They were pleasantly surprised by the wildlife they encountered along the way. This trail is perfect for those looking for a quicker, yet still rewarding, experience.
Local Parks and Gardens
Within Roma, there are several beautiful parks and gardens worth visiting. One standout is the Roma Bush Gardens, a peaceful spot showcasing native plants. It’s a great place for a relaxing walk and to enjoy nature.
I also visited Apex Park, which is well-maintained and perfect for a family outing. The park has plenty of open space and facilities for picnics. It’s a lovely place to unwind and enjoy the outdoors.
Another favorite was the Roma Bungil Cultural Centre, which has a small but charming garden. The garden features local artwork and sculptures, adding a cultural touch to the natural beauty. It’s a wonderful spot to appreciate both art and nature.
Roma’s parks and gardens are ideal for leisurely strolls and enjoying the fresh air. Each one offers something unique, from native plants to cultural exhibits. These green spaces are a testament to Roma’s commitment to preserving natural beauty.
Meeting the Locals
One night, we dined at the Royal on Ninety-Nine and joined a trivia game afterward. It was exciting and lots of fun, with many laughs. We even came third in the competition, which made the night memorable.
We also spent a few hours having drinks at the Queen’s Arms. The atmosphere was great, and we enjoyed chatting. Everyone was friendly and made us feel welcome.
Asking for directions on the street was easy because the people of Roma were so helpful. Their willingness to assist and their cheerful attitude stood out. The community spirit in Roma is strong, and it was heartwarming to experience.
Overall, our interactions with the locals made our visit even more special. The friendliness and community vibe were truly impressive. Roma’s people are a big part of what makes the town so charming.
Tips for Future Visitors
Visiting Roma is best in the cooler months of winter when the weather is pleasant. Spring and Autumn should be bearable too. Summer days can be very hot, so plan accordingly. Always pack sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water.
