I was in Jordan during the 2nd week of November 2015. As I was travelling around it became apparent that tourist numbers were down. On enquiring about this I was told that this was their high season but this year it was like a low season in terms of tourist numbers. I asked what their next real low season would be like and the expectation was that the tourist numbers would dry up altogether (or virtually nothing).
Jordan is already doing it tough with accepting up to a million refugees. The war in neighbouring Syria has really put pressure on the Jordanians. The economy relies on tourism for approximately 10% of its Gross National Product normally. If the tourism jobs cease this will put further pressure on the economy.
It was lovely walking around the capital, Amman and at famous sites like Petra and Wadi Rum with small amounts of tourists or on some occasions none but I hope this country’s situation will improve. Jordan has a lot to offer – Petra and Wadi Rum were amazing! Unfortunately I ran out of time and money to see Jerash, the Dead Sea, the Red Sea and Aqaba. It was a lot more expensive to travel around Jordan than what I expected. Perhaps this is a result of the stress on the economy from receiving so many of Syria’s refugees. Some day I hope to return…
Jordan is considered a safe country of the Middle East. Of course there are isolated incidents from time to time. As always, check your government’s travel advisory website for up to date information before travelling and, for the time being, definitely do not travel near Jordan’s borders. Most importantly, enjoy this beautiful country!
