If you would like to experience a quaint English city, full of tradition and ambience then Cambridge is your city. Regardless of whether you have studied at university or not, you won’t be able to resist the charm of this place. However, the university is a major part of Cambridge and its attraction for visitors.  When you think of higher education in England you think of Oxford and you think of Cambridge.  It is one of the ‘big two’. Cambridge, located in the East of England, is a city steeped in history and culture. As mentioned, it is best known for its prestigious university, which dates back to 1209 and is home to some of the most iconic and beautiful buildings in the city. But Cambridge is not just for students, it is also a great destination for all explorers looking for a mix of culture, history, and relaxation.

Cambridge, England is a good city for explorers to visit for several reasons:

Rich history and culture: Cambridge is home to a rich history and cultural heritage, including many historic buildings and landmarks such as King’s College Chapel, St John’s College and the University of Cambridge, which is one of the oldest universities in the world.

Scenic beauty: Cambridge is surrounded by scenic countryside, including the River Cam, which offers lovely views and opportunities for walking, boating and picnicking.

Cultural attractions: There are many cultural attractions in Cambridge, including museums, galleries, theatres and music venues, which offer a diverse range of exhibitions, performances and events.

Shopping and dining: Cambridge offers a variety of shopping and dining options, ranging from high-end boutiques to traditional pubs and street-side cafes.

Good transportation: Cambridge has good transportation links, with regular trains and buses to London and other cities in the region, making it easy for you to explore the surrounding area.

Here are some of the top things to do in Cambridge:

UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE

The university is made up of 31 colleges, each with their own unique history and architecture. Some of the most famous colleges to visit include King’s College, with its stunning chapel, and Trinity College, where famous alumni such as Isaac Newton and Lord Byron studied. Visitors can take a guided tour of the colleges or simply explore them independently.  I took the liberty of exploring the grounds and buildings myself and found it very relaxing and interesting.  The architecture, alone, is very beautiful and the grounds are really well kept.

Cambridge University is a world-renowned seat of learning with a rich history spanning over 800 years.  The university is one of the oldest and most prestigious in the world, attracting students, scholars and tourists from all over the globe. Whether you are a student of history, architecture, art, or simply a lover of beautiful and historic buildings, Cambridge University is a must-visit destination.

Since its beginnings in 1209 it has grown to become one of the largest universities in the world, with over 31,000 students and around 9,000 staff. The 31 colleges form the core of the university, offering a range of accommodation, dining and social facilities for students.

One of the most famous and iconic buildings of the university, King’s College Chapel,is a stunning example of medieval Gothic architecture. Completed in 1515, the chapel is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in the world, with its intricate stone carvings, stained glass windows and beautiful fan vaulting. The chapel is also home to the world-renowned choir, King’s College Choir, who perform daily services and concerts in the chapel throughout the year.

Another important building in Cambridge is St John’s College, one of the largest and richest colleges of the university. Founded in 1511, the college is known for its stunning architecture, including the Great Gate and the beautiful Old Library, which is said to have inspired the library in J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings.” St John’s College is also home to the famous Bridge of Sighs, a beautiful covered bridge that spans the River Cam and provides stunning views of the college and the surrounding area.

The University of Cambridge is not just famous for its historic buildings, but also for its beautiful gardens and open spaces which I certainly enjoyed and found solace in after my busy time in London. The University Botanic Garden is one of the oldest and most famous botanic gardens in the world, with over 8,000 different species of plants and trees. Visitors can stroll around the 40-acre garden, admiring the many different flowers, shrubs and trees, as well as the many glasshouses and greenhouses that are used to grow tropical and subtropical plants.

Cambridge is also famous for its punting, a traditional pastime that involves propelling a flat-bottomed boat along the River Cam using a long pole. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely punt along the river, admiring the stunning views of the colleges and their gardens. There are many punt operators in Cambridge, offering a range of different tours and packages, so there is something for everyone.  Give it a go – it’s lots of fun!

FITZWILLIAM MUSEUM

Visit the Fitzwilliam Museum: The Fitzwilliam Museum is one of the best art museums in the UK and is home to an extensive collection of paintings, sculptures, ceramics and other artworks. The museum also has a collection of ancient Egyptian artefacts and one of the largest collections of Chinese ceramics outside of China.  Take a boat trip on the River Cam: One of the best ways to see Cambridge is from the water. Visitors can take a leisurely punt or boat trip on the River Cam, which runs through the city. Guides will point out the famous colleges and other landmarks as you glide down the river.

SHOPPING

For those looking for some retail therapy, and let’s face it, we can all do with a bit of that at times, the Grand Arcade is a great place to go. This modern shopping centre has a variety of shops, cafes and restaurants, and is a great place to relax and unwind. From high-end boutiques and independent shops, to traditional pubs and street-side cafes, visitors are sure to find something that appeals to them. Some of the most famous shopping streets in Cambridge include King’s Parade and Trumpington Street, which are home to a range of shops and restaurants. Let the games begin!

THE CAMBRIDGE AMERICAN CEMETERY AND MEMORIAL

The Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial is the only American cemetery in England and is the final resting place of 3,812 American servicemen and women who died during World War II. The cemetery is a peaceful and moving place to visit and is a reminder of the sacrifices made by the American armed forces during the war.

THE KETTLE’S YARD

The Kettle’s Yard is an art gallery and museum that is located in a restored 18th-century house. The gallery is home to an impressive collection of modern and contemporary art, including works by artists such as Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth.  Take a walk in the University Botanic Garden: The University Botanic Garden is the oldest botanic garden in England and is home to over 8,000 different plant species from around the world. The gardens are a great place to relax and take a stroll, and there are also guided tours available.

TRADITIONAL AFTERNOON TEA

Cambridge is home to a number of traditional tea rooms and cafes, where visitors can enjoy a traditional afternoon tea. A perfect way to relax and take a break from sightseeing. 

SEE A SHOW AT THE ARTS THEATRE

The Arts Theatre is one of the oldest theatres in Cambridge and is home to a variety of productions throughout the year, including plays, musicals, and stand-up comedy.

THE ROUND CHURCH

The Round Church is one of the oldest and most unique buildings in Cambridge. The church dates back to the 12th century and is one of only four round churches in England. Visitors can take a guided tour of the church and learn about its history.

Cambridge is a city that has something for everyone, whether you’re interested in history, culture, or just looking for a relaxing break. I would suggest a stop off here to revive and rejuvenate so you are then ready to hit the next city that runs at a more hectic pace. With its beautiful architecture, world-class museums, and tranquil river, it’s the perfect destination for everyone.

I’ve always wanted to visit Cambridge–it looks incredibly beautiful! I’ve always wanted to do a traditional tea so that would be amazing as well. Thank you for your great guide!
